I was anxiously sitting in the examining room with my brother when I first met Dr. Alonso. He was about to embark on the next phase of his aggressive treatment plan, liver resection surgery. My mind was a blur about how to best support him in the way that he needed when Dr. Alonso knocked on the door and entered the room. He introduced himself to us and asked my brother about his journey. Dr. Alonso shared with us a comprehensive, easy to follow education of the issues that my brother was facing and even drew a diagram for visual reference. He meticulously presented his course of action, the reasons why he made that choice and how he was going to accomplish his goal. He patiently answered all of our questions, he never made us feel rushed and never showed irritation when he had to repeat himself, sometimes multiple times. He told us a little about his style of care and what we could expect of him. One thing that stands out in my mind was that he said he takes care of each of his patients like he would his own family. We left feeling like being in his care was a good move and that we were happy that he was our new doctor. As the days drew near to the surgery I could see and feel the trepidation build in my brother and quite frankly in myself also. Finally, the day came, and I was standing in the pre-op room next to my brother when Dr. Alonso came up and greeted us and my initial impression of him was solidified. I was relieved when I saw him, he joked with my brother to help him relax and when my brother said to me, “ I like this guy, “ I felt the same. I felt at peace as I left the room, that we made the right choice with him as our surgeon, I had every confidence that Dr. Alonso would take him through this surgery with precision and skill toward the best outcome possible.
Now, here we are a few days post op and I am pleased to say, that Dr. Alonso continues to honor his commitment, of treating his patients as if they were his own family. He makes us feel like my brother is his only patient when we know he has many. He deals with him as if he is his primary focus and he is kind, considerate and compassionate although my brother is not the ideal hospital patient.
I say all of this in hopes that someone out there who also has the misfortune of needing hepatic care / surgery and is considering Dr. Alonso as their care provider, have some real and honest feedback to go on. To let them know, that they would be wise and fortunate to have Dr. Alonso as their specialist. He has proven to be someone who will look after your best interests when it feels like life is challenging you at your most vulnerable moment. He offers hope when his patient feels hopeless, he gently reminds him what is in his best interest and validates his reasoning. He has a calming presence, an impeccable bed-side manner, he is thorough and pays great attention to detail and is incredibly well-versed in his field. It has been 2 years + on my cancer journey with my brother and I have encountered several healthcare workers and doctors along the way. It is abundantly clear when it is a career for some and a passion for others. Dr. Alonso has a caring soul and an intelligent mind, he is exactly the type of surgeon you want in your corner when you are in that pre-op room preparing to face the unknown.
Good luck and all the best to those who need it and I hope that this proves helpful to you all.
